Potty Training Policy
At Mrs. Victoria's Home Daycare, potty training is supported in a calm, respectful, and developmentally appropriate way.
Potty training works best when the child, parents/guardians, and daycare provider are working together with the same expectations and routine.
Parent responsibility
- Diapers or pull-ups
- Wipes
- Extra clothing
- Extra socks
- Wet bag or plastic bags for soiled clothing
Supply check
Diapers and wipes will be checked each Friday. If items are getting low, parents will be notified and may replenish them the following Monday.
Underwear policy
Children may not attend daycare in underwear until they have been accident-free for one full week.
Definition: Accident-free means the child has gone 7 consecutive days without pee or bowel movement accidents during awake daytime hours.
Until this requirement is met, children must attend daycare in diapers or pull-ups.
Starting underwear at daycare
Once a child has been accident-free for one full week, parents/guardians may speak with Victoria about starting underwear at daycare.
When a child begins wearing underwear at daycare, parents must provide:
- At least 3 full changes of clothing
- Extra underwear
- Extra socks
- Wet bag or plastic bags
- Backup pull-ups, if needed
Accidents
Accidents are a normal part of potty training and will be handled calmly and respectfully.
If a child has two or more accidents in one daycare day, or has repeated accidents over multiple days, they may need to return to pull-ups for at least one full week before trying underwear again.
This is a hygiene issue in a home daycare setting, especially because younger children may be crawling or playing on the floor.
Nap time
Children may be asked to wear a pull-up during nap/rest time until they are consistently waking up dry.
Daycare support
Victoria will support potty training by:
- Offering bathroom opportunities throughout the day
- Encouraging children in a calm and positive way
- Communicating with parents about progress
- Following reasonable potty routines discussed with parents
Victoria cannot provide intensive one-on-one potty training throughout the daycare day, as she is responsible for the care and supervision of all children in the group.
